Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
