European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
