Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
