New research suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
