Sheff Wed Deals with Major Issues, States New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - independent football regulator the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's current difficulties represent a a "serious issue" and the new football authority is seeking powers to investigate clubs in comparable cases, the newly appointed chairman the regulator has announced.

During an extensive discussion, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporter groups associated with the South Yorkshire club in recent days.

The team have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club failing to pay players on time on several different times, including in September.

"Obviously the club has become a serious issue for football authorities and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the historic institutions for football in England and in recent days we have met fan representatives.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will allow us to have the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they require examination and acted upon."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor the Thai businessman indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has failed to complete a sale with interested parties.

Missed wage deadlines on time in spring months caused limitations by the league officials in June, blocking the team from conducting any recruitment activities for the following recruitment periods, although that restriction was lifted in August.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the supporters of Wednesday, teams facing challenges where fans are dedicated to a regional establishment that has represented their community in many cases.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or approached financial ruin, for reasons that have nothing to do with the fans themselves."

When asked if the oversight body could require an chairman to relinquish a club if they are considered unfit, the chairman responded: "When asking whether 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and understand the situation, we will."

But Kogan stressed that compelling proprietors to divest clubs would be considered the final option and the oversight body would choose to work with them.

"Our least desirable course of action is start getting involved with an specific team, an specific proprietor, without being able to work with that chairman to fix the problems affecting the organization and the chairman's encountering," Kogan said.

"In actuality, when you examine the past of football, over the last 20 or 30 years there have been particular chairmen, few in number, but some who have been irresponsible in the manner they have operated their clubs and ultimately decline to assume obligation for the long-term prospects."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to lay out the remit of the regulator on Wednesday and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"This position carries substantial significance, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the remarkable development accomplished might evaporate rapidly," the regulator warned.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the terms of English football is a substantial accomplishment - we need to continue the progress.

"Considerable investment coming into football and has been invested for the recent generations, because there's no guarantee it will persist in entering the game, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to take a really clear view on challenges and obviously, of the coming seasons."

Premier League Concerns

The Premier League opposed the creation of a regulator because of fears of a negative impact on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the prosperity and expansion as an economic entity of the top division.

"Being fully aware of the worry about compromising the top flight as an elite competition of England. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, actually, they have been advising us privately they have a significant confidence."

Ideological Links

Kogan is still facing a "full inquiry" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he revealed he contributed money to the Labour Party in recent years.

The chairman provided financial support for Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my past party membership [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the official body endorsed my nomination," Kogan said.

"I am presently disconnected from any sort of politics."
